The Basics

The engineers at Honda have always tried to build vehicles that foster a bond between the driver and their machine, and folks who take the time to study their vehicle's drivetrain will discover innumerable ways to deepen and extend that bond. The hybrid system designed by Honda is, on a basic level, composed of two mutually reinforcing power sources: a gasoline-powered engine and an electric motor. Honda's hybrid vehicles are able to achieve the incredible fuel economy ratings that define them by alternating power from one to the other depending on the conditions that you face on the road.

Hybrid Power in the Accord: Specifications and Driving Modes

The 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid is the most recognizable name in Honda's hybrid lineup, and perhaps no other vehicle better exemplifies what this manufacturer can do! Automotive News has praised the "creative combination of new technology" that drivers will find in this remarkable vehicle, and you'll be hard-pressed to disagree with their fond review once you've seen this sedan in action. In addition to offering city fuel economy of an EPA-estimated 49 mpg,* the 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid provides up to 212 total system horsepower. What's more, its gasoline-powered and electric motors generate 129 lb-ft and 232 lb-ft of torque, respectively.

Driving Modes

The Accord Hybrid guarantees maximum efficiency at all speeds by switching automatically among three distinct drivetrain configurations: EV Mode, Hybrid Mode, and Engine Mode.

  • In EV Mode, the Accord is powered solely by its lithium ion battery pack, and uses no gasoline at all! If you exceed this mode's maximum speed or deplete the Accord Hybrid's battery, it moves into Hybrid Mode.
  • In Hybrid mode, the Accord Hybrid's 2.0L gasoline engine powers the generator, mentioned above, but the lithium ion power source remains the vehicle's primary motive force.
  • In Engine Mode, on the open road, the Accord Hybrid's electric motor rests while the gasoline-powered engine takes the lead! Here, drivers will enjoy functionality and fuel efficiency similar to that offered by the sixth gear on a manual transmission.

The Accord Hybrid also comes standard with a driver-activated Sport Mode function and an ECON button!

  • Sport Mode puts both of the Accord Hybrid's power sources to work simultaneously, maximizing your ability to accelerate and maintain high speeds.
  • When you press the ECON button, the Accord Hybrid will minimize its power and gasoline usage in order to help you stay on the road for longer periods of time. No matter which driving modes you operate in the most, the Accord Hybrid offers an experience that can't be beat!
